Welcome to MountainClan, the clan of the mountains.

Azureflight trekked acorss the terriory, resisting the urge to hunt the plentiful rabbit in the grassy parts of the lower mountains. Other cats in his clan didn't like rabbit, but after many days and nights with Sixclaw he had become fond of the meat. Before long they were climbing steeper, the grass becoming long brown strands growing sparsly between rocks.

Snowpaw followed her mentor through the MountainClan territory, occasionally stumbling on loose rocks. She shivered "How does MountainClan live up here?"

"There" Stonepool mewed as she spat the thorn onto the den floor "You should keep away from the thorns next time" She chided "You can go back to the nursery now"
"Thanks Stonepool" Leafkit mewed and ran out of the den to where her sister was playing in the clearing.

"Generations after generations have lived up here. They get used to it. I believe that this was where the clans began in the first place." He turned to Snowpaw, her paws working uneasily on the unfamiliar floor.

Cliffkit squealed as he attacked his friend, Leafkit, pinning her down into the cold hard floor. He was much bigger than leafkit, feeling his own strength as he held her down. He felt proud to be the biggest kit in the nursery, although that might also be due to the fact that he was only a moon and a half away from apprentiship.

Leafkit squirmed under Cliffkit's weight "That's unfair!" She squealed.

Rainkit pounced at Cliffkit and bundled him off her sister "Let's get him!" She squealed to her sister.

Falconstar emerged from her den and padded over to were Summitfall was sharing tongues with Dapplebreeze, "I'm going out for a little walk, Summitfall, could you look after the camp while I'm gone?" She asked.

The growing wind buffeting his fur as he jumped, Cliffkit flew across to the opposite side of the kits. "You can't get me!" He teased. Not wanting to hurt the kits' feelings, he added, "Don't worry, when you're my age you'll be able to do all of this! It comes with age!"

Plumfeather watched as her giant kit, Cliffkit, tussled with the younger kits. She watched him with pride as he reassured Leafkit and Rainkit that they would one day too, be able to do the things he did. 'But I don't think either of them will be his size when they're his age.' she added silently. She remembered her painful birth of the two kits. They had both been born at large sizes. Burdockfang had been proud, and so had she.

"Thank you, Summitfall" Falconstar replied. She padded over and through the camp entrance, it was like a different world out there. She carefully made her way up the steep slope.

Falconstar bounded up to the top of the mountain, looking around, the stars of Silverpelt shining. It was getting late, as the medicine cats weren't back from the Moonfalls yet. She quietly leaped back down the mountain, leaping from one stone to another.

Redsplash licked furociously at his fur. He had just gone out for a few moments to get some fresh air and now all his fur had been blown in the wrong direction. "Honestly," he told his fellow elders, "I'm sure the wind was never this bad when I was a youngster."
Jaywhisper, who was currently changing the bedding (as a punishment, second one of the day actually, for talking back to the deputy), rolled her eyes. "Get used to it, Stiff-stick. At least your not the one hunting in it."
What a silly young she-cat. No respect for her elders, no pride for her Clan. A disgrace to the MountainClan. It's a pity- she has a beatiful and rare pelt for a MountainClan warrior. Redsplash thought. "As a matter of fact," retorted Redsplash calmly, "you are the one currently doing an apprentices job due to your actions, which I believe included complaining that it was too cold."
Jaywhisper felt her fur grow hot, and didn't reply or look up, at the elder who was now chuckling away.

Sixclaw shook his head doubtfully. "Something is going to happen, Stonepool, and Azureflight isn't going to tell us. Somethiing will happen to him, but I have the strange feeling it shall affect all of us. We must prepare. Make sure the most important herbs are protected and sheltered, and make sure we have enough. I will go talk to Falconstar."

Jaywhisper left the elder's den, happy that her extra duties were finished, headed into her den, adn curled up in her nest to sleep

Brownkit stared up at the roof of the cave with the weird pokey-outy things hanging down from it, puffing out his chest as he remembered the last time he had looked up at the roof it had seemed so much taller, and he had refrained from looking up there because it made him feel small and insignificant. But now it seemed so much closer, and he almost felt that with one leap he could touch the roof... okay, maybe that was an exaggeration. But, he thought, with a sly smile, looking over at the rocky ledges that led upwards. If he reached... maybe the third ledge up, he could probably jump and touch the biggest of the pokey-outy things. Oh, how that would impress Plumfeather! Oh, and Burdockfang, his father! Maybe he would be awarded his apprentice name early! "Cliffkit," he said, nudging his brother. He wouldn't leave him out of this, "let's leave these little kits and see if we can climb those ledges and touch the big pokey-outy thing!" Cliffkit rolled his eyes. "It's called a stone-tooth." Brownkit felt his whiskers twitching. "You made that up, didn't you?" Cliffkit shrunk. "No!" He lied, but he couldn't hide the edge in his voice which gave it away. "Come on then." Said Brownkit, leading the way to the other side of the cave. He jumped, and landed on the first ledge with ease. But it was thin, and he had to press himself against the wall to keep himself up. Cliffkit scratched his ear with his hind leg. "I don't know if these are for climbing. The next ledge is even smaller! No cat could fit on that." Brownkit's tail shot up. "But a kit can!"

Grayspots watched as Leafkit and Rainkit scurried around in front of her showing off their 'battle moves'.

Rainkit stopped as he spotted a long brown tail waving around on the dusty ground. He crouched, shook his haunches then pounced on the tail. Expecting a mew of surprise, he jumped as he heard an unfriendly hiss and squealed. The 'tail' slithered in his grasp, and realizing what it was he let out another squeal and ran towards his sister.

The snake followed him and drew back to strike as the kit hid behind Leafkit. The snake hissed and leaped forward, and wrapped itself around the struggling she-kit.

Leafkit squealed and tried to escape, but the snake's bind only got tighter. Then she saw the snake's fangs and squealed even louder.

Grayspots meanwhile, was preoccupied talking with Blackleaf, figured that they were the normal kit-play squeals.

Rainkit was frozen in terror.

The snake tried to bite the kit's exposed throat, luckily Leafkit's constant squirming saved her from an instant death as it instead pierced her shoulder. Leafkit went limp, the poison had knocked her out. The snake, satisfied with its catch retreated into its den.

Rainkit, determined to save his sister, ran after it into the crack in the rock.

Grayspots, noticing the lack in noise, turned around.

"The kits!" she gasped, "they're gone!"

Bloodleaf's head snapped up as he heard Grayspots' cry. He bounded to her, and then heard a little mew, followed by a hiss. "Not another snake," he thought as he remembered the horrible death of his brother, Sorrelclaw. He had been killed by one, choked to death, rather than poisoned. He pricked his ears, listening for the location of the kits.
"Where are they!?" He said, starting to panic.

Brownkit took a leap to the second ledge, barely reagining his balance. As soon as he ddid, he looked down to see that Cliffkit was still at the bottom, his tail between his legs. "The teeth look scary," he whispered. Brownkit rolled his eyes. "You're named after a cliff and can't even climb a ledge." But, despite his brother's words which made him feel shameful and suddenly determined to prove that he was worthy of his name, he stayed down, something in his gut telling him this wasn't safe.

"I don't know!" Grayspots cried, these were her sister's kits, she would feel guilty for the rest of her life if they weren't found safely.

Rainkit threw himself at the snake and bit down on its tail, "wet wo!" he growled, still holding on to the snake.

The snake retaliated easily and smacked its tail against the stone wall of the tiny cave. Rainkit let go with a squeal of pain, but managed to get to his paws and throw himself at the snake's jaws, where it held Leafkit.

The snake looked down, annoyed that it could only carry one of its catches. It considered the two kits and picked up the larger one, the tom and carried it deeper into the cave. This one was still awake, which meant that it could escape if it was left behind.

Leafkit fell to the ground as the snake dropped her to pick up her brother.

Rainkit squealed and kicked as the snake carried him further and further away from his sister, then the snake bit into his scruff, and he slumped unconscious.

Bloodleaf gasped when he caught another squeal and ducked into a crack in the cave, where he could just fit his head, hulders, and forepaws, but no more. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he saw that the snake was curling around Rainkit and Leafkit who were now both unconcious. He gave a sharp hiss, lashing out at the snake with claws unsheathed.

Brownkit was at the third ledge, trying not to look down like he just had. He didn't realise how high he was!

Nettlepaw was close by when she saw Brownkit, about halfway up the nursery wall. She dropped the moss she was carrying. "Brownkit, get down from there!" She said, lashing her tail with annoyance but also worry. "Plumfeather, your kit is climbing higher than he should be!" She called to Plumfeather, but little did she realise that Plumfeather was preoccupied with a completely different problem.
